Interview with Evan of How Not To Steal A Sidekick II

So we finally wrapped up the interview with Evan and inserted the wonderful Stolen Sidekick song from Blind Routine. During the interview we address what his website www.evanwashere.com/stolensidekick is really about for him, his response to some of his doubters and uncover his relentless pursuit of proving his honorable purpose. He gives a short update on the status of the police report, details how much he received in donations and what he may or may not do with the surplus funds.

That was a great interview. I hope Evan gets the Sidekick back and teaches those young kids a lesson. He did all he could to try and get them to give it back but they wouldn’t give in to him. Also, I agree with him about not taking acccepting offers from other sites and money. That could hurt him more than it could help him. Anyway, I’ll be looking at his site everyday to check for updates.

I still think this is gone way out of control, let the police deal with it and leave this girl alone, if she has brken the law than let the law sort it all out. no need to try and ruin somones life over a fucking phone you could have bought 3 times by now.

I disagree with Jacob here, he seems to feel that she must be some sort of INNOCENT girl who is being the victim here. She is morally flawed, and for all that i can tell, deserves everything that she is getting.

She is the one that screwed up, and still is, despite the many chances she had to make this situation right. She could have returned the phone dozens of times, but instead, she cusses out Evan, and brings family and friends into it to treat him like shit, even though they are the ones who have done wrong.

And Jacob, if you even read his website, it would mention that they DID buy a new Sidekick already.

It was the girl’s false pride that got her in this situation in the first place, Evan even offered a REWARD for the phone’s return, but unlike any human-esque creature, she decides to keep it, and lie, and treat him badly.

She deserves what she gets, this is a situation she could have pulled herself out of at any time. She refuses to do so, so this is where its at.

I think of the situation as a fresh breathe of air in what seems like a slowly declining system of morality that is in the world today. Keep it up Evan.

I liked what Rhys had to say… and I’d add that Evan himself has said his past has
not been perfect… but this is about this particular situation… he doesn’t want to see anyone go jail… he just wanted to shame “these” people into doing the right thing and return the sidekick…

Perhaps with everything that has gone on the last few days Evan himself might become a better person for it… sure he might have gone about it in a more discreet manner… and perhaps it’s snowballed into an avalanche that he couldn’t have foreseen… but the fact remains that a sidekick went missing… it turned up and wasn’t returned to it’s rightful owner… so he’s set out to see that it does… by any means necessary…

I just find the whole ordeal facinating… it brings the world wide web into focus…

This is one of the rare times a victim is able to lift a rock and find cockroaches for all the world to see. The thief and her friends continually show their lack of remorse for what they admitted they did, and they deserve what they are getting. Evan’s past, motives or financial gain aren’t the issue.

People who break the law should be prepared for consequences. In this case, Evan is merely getting the story out in as lawful a manner as possible, and the thieves underestimated how the public at large would feel once they heard the circumstances.

So she deserves every ounce of trash she gets thrown at her. And you know what? Noone said that a 16 yearold mother is the devil, but that in itself is agaisnt the LAW (just like stealing, can you believe it?).

You know, that thing that governs the society you are a part of.

Unless you happen to live on a small island. To which, I’d love to know who provides your internet service.

Once again, if she breaks the law, she and her pedofile boyfriend are going to get trash for it. Especially the boyfriend.

To those (like Jacob) who think it’s a bit much for one lousy phone. You need to be of the understanding, like Evan and his supporters, that it is the PRINCIPLE of the thing. Stealing is stealing, there is no grey area and everyone should be treated accordingly no matter their race or religion. My best to Evan, your effort to see justice done is a real inspiration to me (and others obviously).

His website was brought to my attention a few days ago, and I’ve found it to be supremely amusing. It’s just good to see thieves get caught and called out on their crime.

Evan apparently thought that a little “gotcha!” would motivate them into returning the phone, but he did not count on them having no shame. I love the excuse that they’re not going to give the phone back because they’d be out money. Hello? Whose fault is that? If returning a phone that they stole (or bought, if you buy the “we bought it from a cabbie” story) puts them out cash, they deserve it.

Now, unless they act fast, they may lose a bit more than the money they’d be out for returning the phone. Personally, I’m looking forward to reading about them being arrested.

My only critique of Evan would be that he’s a bit too starved for approval. I saw nothing wrong with his pay-pal link and request for donations to offset the costs of his site. A donation is a donation - not a fee. If someone wanted to throw him a couple bucks, I see no harm done. If someone prefers to keep their money, I see no harm done. Yet enough people complained about it, so he took the paypal link down.

I don’t think he’s getting anything more than satisfaction from his efforts, but even if he was making some money off it, so what?

I could understand people being upset if the thieves made a website about this (hmm, now that would be funny) and were making money off it, because they would be making money from their criminal act (the theft of the cell phone).

I don’t see a problem if the victim made a few bucks from this. I’d even respect him for making lemonade out of the lemons.

Jacob:

I don’t think Evan is out to ” try and ruin somones life over a fucking phone”. His first attempt to get the phone back was to send a message to the phone (and thus whoever found it) offering a reward for it. The thieves chose not to take him up on it, and tried intimidation instead.

Evan then chose the public humiliation route, and his website was born on June 6 - using information and pictures that they provided. He has used restraint regarding information that they did not provide (such as their real address). At any time in the last 5 days, they could have returned the stolen property, along with an apology and it would have all gone away.

Returning stolen property and apologizing for not returning it sooner does not ruin any lives. In fact, it may improve lives, if the people involved honestly re-evaluated their values and refrained from stealing and refrained from buying stolen property in the future. If any lives are ruined, it will be ruined by the stubborness of the thieves. If they do not do the right thing, the police will have to get involved, and they could potentially get criminal records out of this. Thus it could be argued that Evan was doing them a service by trying to give them a way to resolve this without that outcome. A little humiliation is far better than jailtime.

Yes I hope Evan takes this all the way! But let’s be real people her life will not be ruined because it’s not like she was going to accomplish great things with it. That is unless you consider having a child out of wed lock at the ripe young age of 16. Oh and being on welfare. I say put her in jail or on a roadside picking up litter.

I love the people that are bashing Evan for going this far with it. I’m happy as hell to see him do this. As was pointed out, it’s for the principal of the thing. I’m sick to death of good, honest people having to sit back and take it in the shorts. The theives need to be taught a lesson. Who’s going to give it to them? Sure as hell not their parents or anyone. Go Evan!

how do I KNOW about his drug use? because he told evryone, he also TOLD everyone that he deals drugs, I didnt make it up

a phone was lost, now in the world of KARMA its stolen, YES OF COURSE I UNDERTSAND THAT

let’s stick to the facts… a phone was lost… it was located by those that lost it…
they asked for it back… even willing to give a reward for its return…
the people that had the phone claimed they bought it from a cabbie…
(a word from the cabbie could confirm or rebute that)…
this story was only offered up after they figured out a lot of info had been found
on them…

those that have the sidekick chose not to return it or even concider it… instead
they wanted the item for themselves… they haven’t even to my knowledge said
how much they gave for it to this supposed cabbie… yet they’re belligerent in
response to the people that truely own the sidekick…

let me ask you this… what would you do…?

Evan took it upon himself to try and reach their conscious by humiliation… so
far they don’t seem to have one… I’m sure you’ve heard the golden rule of old…
“Do unto others as you would have done unto you”… not the version that seems
so apparent in todays society… “Do unto others before it’s done unto you”…

Through all this they still refuse to just give it back… so in comes the law…

first off, it wasnt his phone, the ORIGINAL owner lost it, it wasnt stolen from her, and from the sounds of it, she doesnt really want it back, these people aren;t hard up for money, you know alot of people who live in manhattan, and live in miami beach? but thats not the point

what I would do is phone the police, if I were the OWNER, after that you have to wait and see what the police will do, ISNT THAT HOW A SOCIETY WORKS? when I was a kid this kinda thing was called being a tattle-tale(you know how to spell it)

No one has to worry about any bans. We are leaving all comments up. In our next episode of Completely Biased we’re actually going to talk about whether or not what Evan did was ethical, considering that the law states that someone is innocent until proven guilty and this girl hasn’t even stood up to trial.

Of course, that’s my fair perspective, Josh fully stands and supports Evan’s claims. Lol.

Do you have some kind of reading comprehension problem… cause the way I read it… Evan just wanted the sidekick back(to give back to his friend)… and none of this would have taken place if the girl in question would have been more cooperative and found out more about the sidekick she had in her possession…

You are incorrect, she DID want it back, or else she wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of buying a COMPLETELY NEW ONE before they found out who had it. The situation isn’t about money, Evan says that many times, yet some screwup like yourself needs to get his flawed information from somewhere, or else what would the internet be without people like you?

It seems you are wrong again about your half-assed assumptions. He seems to have dropped it at first, he even put up a reward for the phone, but alas, they thought it gone, so they bought another one, it is WHEN they bought another one, they find that the person who stole it was using their device. they message them, ask for it back, and like the little punks they are, they bring race into it, against Evan, and say they won’t give it back. From there on, it became a issue of a stolen phone, and it is THEN that Evan went to the police about the situation. What people are doing to the girl and her family is on their own accord, not Evan’s.

Find me ANYWHERE where it says he’s a drug dealer. All you seem to be doing is digging up dirt that isn’t mentioned anywhere, other than in your head, to throw at him? Actually, yes, we have read words from the suspects…… quite a few actually, but if you had anything relating to the truth to say, you would have known that already. they aren’t respectful, they lie, and they treat people like shit.

Evan hasn’t mentioned anywhere on his sight about her nationality, not a single racial word, unlike them who call him a white “biyotch”. You are stating what others are stating, not Evan, so back off already. Evan isn’t a drug dealer. You ask for proof which has been given on multiple occasions MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, already! there are even PICTURES of them that THEY took with the original owner’s phone! How about you? Prove that he’s a drug dealer, prove why we should listen to you? You wont, because you’re just some little kid, or maybe a friend of the people who took the phone in the first place.

Nick_name, you can’t just say “on other forums” as a means of proof of anything, your words couldbe just as flawed as Evan’s in your mind. You want to prove something to us? Give us concrete stuff, perhaps links to things like Evan claiming he is a “drug dealer”.

Even if that is who Evan is, it doesn’t make his situation any less correct, we aren’t sitting here comparing him to her, we are sitting, listening to a situation that isgoing on, where, (even if he was a “drug dealer”) he and his friend had still been wronged. Nothing can be judged by the past correctly, like myself, I was abad student in highschool for some time, butI am quite successful now. I’d prefer to keep this to the current situation.

This seems a pretty open and shut case guys. No matter what evan did in the past, thats totally irrelavent to this particular case. Evan is helping his fried get her phone back. He wouldnt need to do this if the person who stole it had returned it (for monry I add). Instead they were abusive and rude, not to mention racist, and refused to co-operate. As a result theyre getting all they deserve. The fact evan may or may not have dealed drugs, or used drugs, or whatever, is totally irrelavent. Nobody is perfect, theres dirt on everyone, and I dont recall evan ever stating he was perfect?

My name is Richard. I am from New Zealand and am not afaraid of saying it or hiding behind a name such as nick_name.

I have been following Evan’s blog with an aire of anticipation since I found it on another site. I don’t care what Evan has done in the past. In my opinion I feel that it was in the past and he has learned from it and is now an upstanding member of the public (Or I give him the benifit of the doubt that he is).

Evan - Moral Vigilante.

Indeed he is and thank god somone has the decency to be one in this day and age. He has never physically harmed the person or their family and friends. Infact he has never condoned the actions of any people that have been around the people in question. His information has come from the people themselves or people that know how to get the information.

I fully condone Evan’s actions in this matter and if I had the moxie to do it I would do it myself. Evan has said numerous times that he is not in this to make money. All he wants is the person to take responsibility for their actions, I have seen what Evan has written in his blog about the costs that he has incurred. I listened to what he said in the interview about how much people have donated. The donation link was just a donation link and he mentions that he does not expect anyone to use it and indeed they should not certainly if they cannot afford to. The donations certainly cover the imediate costs for the site and in the interview he mentions he has not decided what to do with the remainder of the money but that it may go to a charity such as Red Cross. Good for him if he does donate it but I wouldn’t fault him for keeping it either. It was donated to him to maintain the site and he has done that extreamly attentively with updates and information to the detriment of his normal work.

Keep it up Evan. I hope that the person with the cellphone finally finds that they do actually have some moral decency left in them to at the very least return the phone and apologise. Even if it takes a prison term to get them to find it. Perhaps if the law does get strong on them and makes them do time it will make them think twice about trying to pull the wool over the eyes of another person and then to try to make them out to be the one in the wrong. I also think that you Evan were totally right to post the pictures of all the people that had their pictures taken. Yes she is 16 and if any of them had been inappropriate and you had posted them then you would have been taken in front of a court and rightly so but they were not (At least the ones you posted were not). I don’t get it. Why are you so interested in Evan’s past? He’s no saint, granted. I doubt any of us are perfect. It still doesn’t change that these people have (or had) the phone that belonged to Evan’s friend and refused to return it.

Even if Evan is a former lawbreaker - or even a current one - it does not change a thing. His friend should get her phone back. If they are unwilling to return her property, they should be punished.

Ruining the wedding - or at least preventing his friend’s sister from attending it - may not be against the law, but it does help explain his anger.

Just watched ‘Big Fat Liar’, which I found to be quite similar to this ordeal.
An excellent family show about a kid who gets a ride to a school to drop off an essay, titled “Big Fat Liar”, In a Hollywood producers car. The paper falls out, in the car, and the producer makes no attempt to call the kid when he notices the paper in the car. He reads it, and tells the limo driver to double time it out of there. He proceeds to make announce for the following summer the movie he will be making…Big Fat Liar.
The kid sees the advert on TV, and tells his dad, who doesn’t believe him. He goes to Hollywood to get the sleazy producer to call his dad and tell him that he actually wrote the story.

Excellent movie, hilarious, and it is all about principle. Karma. He didn’t even want credit/royalties/etc. Just recognition to his father.
