Evan took it upon himself to try and reach their conscious by humiliation… so

I don’t think Evan is out to ” try and ruin somones life over a fucking phone”. His first attempt to get the phone back was to send a message to the phone (and thus whoever found it) offering a reward for it. The thieves chose not to take him up on it, and tried intimidation instead.

Evan then chose the public humiliation route, and his website was born on June 6 - using information and pictures that they provided. He has used restraint regarding information that they did not provide (such as their real address). At any time in the last 5 days, they could have returned the stolen property, along with an apology and it would have all gone away.

Returning stolen property and apologizing for not returning it sooner does not ruin any lives. In fact, it may improve lives, if the people involved honestly re-evaluated their values and refrained from stealing and refrained from buying stolen property in the future. If any lives are ruined, it will be ruined by the stubborness of the thieves. If they do not do the right thing, the police will have to get involved, and they could potentially get criminal records out of this. Thus it could be argued that Evan was doing them a service by trying to give them a way to resolve this without that outcome. A little humiliation is far better than jailtime.

Evan apparently thought that a little “gotcha!” would motivate them into returning the phone, but he did not count on them having no shame. I love the excuse that they’re not going to give the phone back because they’d be out money. Hello? Whose fault is that? If returning a phone that they stole (or bought, if you buy the “we bought it from a cabbie” story) puts them out cash, they deserve it.

Now, unless they act fast, they may lose a bit more than the money they’d be out for returning the phone. Personally, I’m looking forward to reading about them being arrested.

My only critique of Evan would be that he’s a bit too starved for approval. I saw nothing wrong with his pay-pal link and request for donations to offset the costs of his site. A donation is a donation - not a fee. If someone wanted to throw him a couple bucks, I see no harm done. If someone prefers to keep their money, I see no harm done. Yet enough people complained about it, so he took the paypal link down.

I don’t think he’s getting anything more than satisfaction from his efforts, but even if he was making some money off it, so what?

I could understand people being upset if the thieves made a website about this (hmm, now that would be funny) and were making money off it, because they would be making money from their criminal act (the theft of the cell phone).

I don’t see a problem if the victim made a few bucks from this. I’d even respect him for making lemonade out of the lemons.

People who break the law should be prepared for consequences. In this case, Evan is merely getting the story out in as lawful a manner as possible, and the thieves underestimated how the public at large would feel once they heard the circumstances.

Perhaps with everything that has gone on the last few days Evan himself might become a better person for it… sure he might have gone about it in a more discreet manner… and perhaps it’s snowballed into an avalanche that he couldn’t have foreseen… but the fact remains that a sidekick went missing… it turned up and wasn’t returned to it’s rightful owner… so he’s set out to see that it does… by any means necessary…

I just find the whole ordeal facinating… it brings the world wide web into focus…

NO I will not listen to the interview, just wondering if he told his less than holy lifestyle

She is the one that screwed up, and still is, despite the many chances she had to make this situation right. She could have returned the phone dozens of times, but instead, she cusses out Evan, and brings family and friends into it to treat him like shit, even though they are the ones who have done wrong.

And Jacob, if you even read his website, it would mention that they DID buy a new Sidekick already.

It was the girl’s false pride that got her in this situation in the first place, Evan even offered a REWARD for the phone’s return, but unlike any human-esque creature, she decides to keep it, and lie, and treat him badly.

She deserves what she gets, this is a situation she could have pulled herself out of at any time. She refuses to do so, so this is where its at.

I think of the situation as a fresh breathe of air in what seems like a slowly declining system of morality that is in the world today. Keep it up Evan.
